Camp 123d in the woods Near Jones cross roads April 25 My Dear Mother Thare [sic] is a mail a going out this morning So I thought I would answer Your ever dear letter I did not have time to write before we left Raleigh. we have Started in route for Johnson + his army we gave him a week to Surrender but he would not come to our terms. + now Sherman is a going to make him or do worse Gen Grant, arrived here one Sunday + in the afternoon went to the front + had an interview with Johnson. Giving him till midnight to Surrender as he did not comply with the terms we moved on him at day we are now at Jones cross roads 15 miles from the city of Raleigh [page break] I do not think we will move to day the weather is warm & pleasant Bill Denison has gone to the Hospital this morning as he was not able to stand [underline] latest Report [/underline] just came in is that Genl= Joseph Johnson has surrendired [sic] [underline] oficial [sic] G.H.E [/underline] Mother I am glad you have bought a place I will make [strikethrough] go [/strikethrough] a good fragment on the place this fall when I get home Mother we shant [sic] have no tear up and move the next year + that will be a good deal dont [sic] you think so I guess you do I have learned something by coming into the army it has been the best School that I ever attended in my life experience is a good school you know I have not any more time to write so good Bye except this with much love to you & Carrie C.J.
